Iowa City is a unique Midwest city with the most diverse and progressive population in Iowa, composed of artists, college students, families, small business owners, sports fans, and the international population, and the downtown area is where all these communities clash and interact. As a resident of the downtown area, I witness all the peculiarities and ambivalences around this neighborhood. In the middle of the busy flow of downtown, residents try to find calmness and pace, while non-downtown residents try to find leisure time and fun at the bars. However, only residents can fully enjoy the beauty of downtown Iowa City and appreciate it during the change of season. For that reason, this photo essay depicts the ambivalence of the downtown scene during all times of the day, exploring the chaotic and calm introspective moments. The photo essay adopts the point of view of someone who can experience the change of the city over time with progress and development accompanied by the metamorphism of its dynamic population, as kids grow and college students come and go. Mainly during the spring, the season of change, many dormant daily life activities are reawakened at the same time as trees grow, and flowers bloom signaling the revival of love and connection in an always transmuting downtown.
