Since the beginning of this class, I feel like I have improved a lot in warming up to people, feeling less awkward by photographing people on the street and approaching people with on the street. I noticed that people don’t usually mind being photographed, and when they do they make it very clear so they get off of your frame but don’t usually bother you.
Also, I think technically I have improved a lot in my layering skills and compositional skills. I have always had a good eye for color and contrast, however, I feel like I have improved even more by combining both things to create a more complex composition.
But definitely, the thing that I have improved the most after this semester is my editing skills, mainly sequencing to create a cohesive story. Linear stories seem “easier” to sequence because it seems obvious to follow a linear order usually beginning-middle-end. However, I had a much easier time sequencing the non-linear photo essay story because I followed my aesthetic intuition, still following a “linear” narrative that made sense for me by combining colors, themes, textures, contrast and even following the morning-afternoon-evening order.
In conclusion, not only this class has enriched my experience as a professional photojournalist but also helped me explore and discover my own photographic editorial style.
