Fast Fashion VS Second-Hand Fashion
The Impact of Fast Fashion
Excessive Consumption of Clothing: Due to how affordable the clothing is and how new trends convince consumers to seek out more. As of 2019, the current report shows that 62 million metric tons of apparel were consumed globally. Due to overconsumption, piles of clothing in landfills, and incinerated clothing. With that, a large amount of materials are being wasted as they cannot be used any further for one certain type of production. 57% of all discarded clothing ends up in landfill.
There are enough clothes on the planet right now to dress the next six generations of the human race.
April Greiman
April Greiman (born March 22, 1948) is an American designer widely recognized as one of the first designers to embrace computer technology as a design tool. April Greiman was a bridge between the modern and postmodern, the analog and the digital. She is a pivotal proponent of the ‘new typography’ and new wave that defined late twentieth-century graphic design

New Wave Style
New Wave design was influenced by Punk and postmodern language theory.  Sans-serif font still predominates. The break from the grid structure meant that type could be set center, ragged left, ragged right, or chaotic. The artistic freedom produced common forms such as the bold stairstep. The text hierarchy also strayed from the top-down approach of the International Style. Text became textured with the development of transparent film and the increase in collage in graphic design.
Avant Garde Style
Avant-garde in French means front guard, advance guard, or vanguard. People often use the term in French and English to refer to people or works that are experimental or novel, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. The origin of the application of this French term to art can be fixed on May 17, 1863, the opening of the Salon des Refusés in Paris, organized by painters whose work was rejected for the annual Paris Salon of officially sanctioned academic art. Salons des Refusés were held in 1874, 1875, and 1886. Over time, avant-garde became associated with movements concerned with art for art's sake, focusing primarily on expanding the frontiers of aesthetic experience, rather than with broader social reform.
Discovery: Environmental causes were always something that caught my interest, deforestation and the impacts of the meat industry are the main topics because it is directly related to where I'm from, Brazil. However, in the last two years, I have been growing my appreciation for second-hand fashion and learning more about the problems of fast fashion. I had trouble figuring out the topic for this project. I knew I wanted to do something about the climate, however, I didn't want to pick anything cliche.
Inspiration: I decided to choose a vintage approach to my poster because it is what comes to my mind when talking about fashion. I want to do something that looks like an ad made out of collages from old vintage magazines.
I found an archive online with many different types of magazines, and that's where I'm drawing inspiration from, together with this Instagram artist:

breadth and depth explorations:
I decided to look for a pin-up style of art, and mainly pin-up girls to use in my poster. Eventually, I stumbled on a '60s aesthetic called "Retro Futurism" and I really liked that idea, so I decided to incorporate it.

Iterations Based On In-Class Critique:
From the feedback I got from the design professionals in class, I was told that I have three good potential finals from my depth explorations, in each of them there are really good elements. However, the first depth is the one that appeals more to what I'm trying to say because of the image of a globe made out of a knitting ball, and the naked woman knitting on top of it.
Based on that, I decided to work with that one as a base and add elements from the other two posters that were well-used and the designer pointed out as a strong element.
1st iteration - Adding the galaxy spiral with the phrase "There are enough clothes on the planet right now to dress the next six generations of the human race" coming out of it as used on the 2nd depth exploration poster.
2nd iteration - Changing the words coming from the UFO to "Clothes deserve a second chance," breaking the central alignment, and adding colors and depth to them, also working on the laser coming out of the UFO, giving it a more diffuse look.
3rd iteration - Changing the words on the speech balloon to just "not your" and in the color red.
4th iteration - Adding a type of "comic book texture" layer on top of the design, to give the comic book feel as used on the 3rd depth exploration poster.
